Winter-Proof Your Skin

Updated: May 23, 2022

When I say I understand the struggles of skincare during a long and harsh winter, trust me I know what I’m talking about. Being from Canada, it is something you grow up and learn how to deal with. I’m not perfect at it, but I’ve found some methods that help protect my skin during the winter.

Cold weather, dries out the skin and with it brings a host of other skin issues. Pretty much, a skincare routine has a similar method all year round. Winter, just makes it extra. It takes more work, effort and consistency. But the routine remains simple. Here are the three most important things.

Hydrate

Internal hydration is key. Keep drinking your water. Just because it’s not hot outside, doesn’t mean you can’t get dehydrated. When it’s cold outside, it can zap the moisture in the air, so it’s important to drink a good amount of water. It’s the same for eating healthy natural foods that are good for your skin and filled with Vitamins.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation can be even more important in the winter than in the summer. Because the air is drier, your skin can get drier and you need to exfoliate the dead skin cells off. I exfoliate more in the winter, because my skin gets drier. It is more effective to do this, because anything you put on your skin, whether it’s lotions or makeup, will go on better. I like to use a cleanser that has some exfoliation.

Moisturize

Constant moisturizing is a must because your skin can get dry really fast in the winter. I moisturize more often in the winter and I definitely implement using oils on my face during the winter. I love almond oil and olive oil. Depending on the day, I will pick to use one or the other. I also use moisturizers that have more vitamins in them like B5, C and E. Super important!

This just covers the basics. The details of which products you use, should be tailored to your skin type. Make sure you winter-proof your skin!
