Oakes Garden Theatre - A Niagara Falls Gem

From the very first time I stepped into Oakes Garden Theatre in Niagara Falls, I knew this place felt different. Tucked away, yet still right at the foot of Clifton Hill and overlooking the Niagara River, is a garden that offers a striking contrast to the energy nearby.

With its formal terraces, stone pathways, carefully planted flower beds and sweeping views, it has the feel of a traditional European garden, evoking an old-world elegance and the refined landscape design of another time. 

And as beautiful as it is today, the history behind Oakes Garden Theatre makes it even more interesting. The property was once home to the Clifton Hotel, one of the prominent hotels that welcomed visitors to Niagara Falls during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After the hotel was destroyed by fire in the early 1930s, the site was given an entirely new life.

Oakes Garden Theatre officially opened in 1937, at a time when considerable attention was being given to beautifying the Niagara Parkway and creating public spaces that complemented the natural wonder of the Falls.

The garden was named for Sir Harry Oakes, a wealthy Canadian businessman and philanthropist who played an important role in its development. Rather than flattening the property, the garden’s designers worked with the steep slope leading toward the Niagara River.

Terraces, stairways and stone walls were incorporated into the landscape, creating different levels and viewpoints and giving the entire property the feeling of an outdoor theatre.

But history and design aside, there is something almost magical about wandering through Oakes Garden Theatre. Once you pass through its gates and begin following the winding paths, it can feel a little like discovering a secret garden hidden in the middle of Niagara Falls.

There are fountains tucked among the greenery, quiet staircases leading from one level to another, beautifully maintained flower beds and little corners that seem as though they belong in a storybook.

Around one bend you might find a peaceful garden view, and around another, a breathtaking glimpse of the Niagara River or the American Falls.

Over the decades, Oakes Garden Theatre has become much more than simply a landscaped park. Its romantic setting has made it a favourite backdrop for weddings, portraits, ceremonies and special occasions. It is easy to understand why.

There is a timeless quality to the gardens that makes you forget, even briefly, that one of Niagara Falls’ busiest tourist districts is only steps away.

Perhaps that contrast is what I love most about it. Clifton Hill is colourful, lively and full of activity, but walk into Oakes Garden Theatre and the atmosphere seems to change.

The noise fades, the pace slows, and suddenly you are surrounded by flowers, mature trees, stone pathways and views that have been enjoyed by generations of visitors.

More than 85 years after it opened, Oakes Garden Theatre remains one of Niagara Falls’ true gems. It is a beautiful piece of the city’s history, but it is also a place that still feels wonderfully alive—a little secret garden, a little storybook, and one of those special places that makes you want to wander just a little longer before heading back through the gates. ||
